bandar Tun Razak is a township as well as parliamentary constituency in Kuala Lumpur.

There are a number of schools and institutions of learning in Bandar Tun Razak. Saidina Uthman Bin Affan Mosque is a major mosque in Bandar Tun Razak. It is located near to Permaisuri Lake, a lake gardens excellent for jogging, relaxing and picnicking. There is a large playground available for children in the lake gardens.

Among other facilities in Bandar Tun Razak, is Stadium Bolasepak Kuala Lumpur (Cheras Football Stadium), Velodrome, Public Swimming Pool, Sports Centre, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM), DBKL Branch Office and Fire Station.

The town is served by the Bandar Tun Razak LRT station on the Sri Petaling line of Kuala Lumpur's Light Rail Transit system


History

Bandar Tun Razak was a very small town in Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s, previously known as Kampung Konggo (or Congo Village). It was named Kampung Konggo as this area was a settlement for retired Malaysian army personnel who served in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1960s under the United Nations. Some veterans still live in their modern houses built during the redevelopment of the area.

It was renamed in 1981 by the fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad. Bandar Tun Razak is separated from Cheras constituency in the late 1990s, making it a single parliamentary constituency.

Geography

The constituency of Bandar Tun Razak is centred mainly at the town of Bandar Tun Razak. The constituency spans from Chan Sow Lin to places such as Taman Segar, Alam Damai, Bandar Tasik Selatan till the lush forests of Sungai Besi Military Camp.

There are a number of residential areas in Bandar Tun Razak.


Taman Jaya

Located just beside Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, this peaceful residential area consists of houses, an area of shoplots and, 2 suraus (Surau Al- Mustaqimah and surau al-ittihadiah), 1 primary school (SK Bandar Tun Razak 1 & 2), 1 secondary school (SMK Bandar Tun Razak) and a fire brigade.

Taman Midah

Taman Midah is a big residential area located just beside Taman Jaya. It consists of modern houses, mainly two-storey houses, and bungalows, two areas of shoplots, 2 primary schools and lots of playgrounds. One playground was quoted as the science experimental site for some secondary school students from SMK Cheras.

Taman Mulia

Taman Mulia is the primary residential area for Bandar Tun Razak. It consists of several residential areas such as Jujur, Ikhlas, Makmur and Mewah. There is even a Bandar Tun Razak S63 STAR LRT station here. Several low cost flats are located here. They are Flat Sri Labuan and Flat Sri Kota.


Culture

Bandar Tun Razak was an unexceptional township compared to Bangsar.

This changed when KL Downtown[1], the night bazaar, opened on 24 June 2006. KL Downtown offers shopping till the wee hours of morning. It is located in former carpark lots. It is a joint venture between Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur and Persatuan Pengasih Malaysia. 400 stalls were built, including an open stage for performance acts by Malaysian singers or arts group.

Night activities at Bandar Tun Razak arose when several places were opened till midnight to boost its customers. Pusat Komuniti Bandar Tun Razak which is located at the heart of Bandar Tun Razak serves food and has a night market.

There are other places that operates in the late night such as Bandar Sri Permaisuri, which is famous for dining at night. There are also plenty of mamak stalls here.


Education

Bandar Tun Razak is famous for its schools and institutions of higher learning. The government has been investing heavily to build schools and institutions of higher learning. Here are some examples of schools in Bandar Tun Razak.

SMK Bandar Tun Razak is located in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. This school is located near SK Bandar Tun Razak (1) and (2). The current headmaster of the school is Rosli bin Hitam


Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah

The former Sekolah Alam Shah occupied the site for 41 years before it moved to Putrajaya. A new school was formed on the old site and is called SM Sains Alam Shah. Students of Sains Alam Shah or better known as ASiS achieved brilliant results for 2005 and 2006 SPM Examinations. In 2005, it was placed fourth amongst boarding schools(called SBPs) while it was placed second in 2006. The school can cater to approximately 600 students, who are form 4 (16 years old) and form 5 (17 years old) students. The current Head Boy is Syed Hamimie Fakhri bin Syed Mohammad, and his deputy, Raja Azlan Shah bin Raja Alang Mohamad. This year shows a promising academic excellence as they emerged No.1 among SBPs in the Diagnostic Examination held last year(2006).

Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Lumpur, better known as Technical Institute Kuala Lumpur (TIKL), is located in Jalan Yaakob Latif. It is a boarding school that offers courses such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Commerce.

Other schools include:

* SM Sains Selangor.
* SMK Seri Permaisuri.
* SMK Seri Mulia.

There are also 2 institutes, for teacher training education, which are:

* Institut Perguruan Ilmu Khas (Special Education Teachers' Institute).
* Institut Perguruan Teknik (Technical Teachers' Institute).



Healthcare

There are two hospitals in Bandar Tun Razak. They are

* Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM)
* Hospital Lady Templer -- the main hospital for Cheras a long time ago. Currently, it is unused and transformed into a clinic.

There are numerous other clinics throughout Taman Midah, Taman Mulia and Flat Sri Kota.


Gardens

Permaisuri Lake Gardens is one of three major lakes in Kuala Lumpur. A previous mining site, it was transformed into a recreational place by DBKL. It is maintained heavily by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and it is one of the most beautiful lakes in Malaysia. A lot of people from all over Cheras, Bandar Tun Razak and Kuala Lumpur, utilise the gardens for jogging, picnicking and other recreational purposes. There are some yoga classes conducted in the gardens in the morning while the park is filled with playful children and joggers in the evening.


Facilities

There are several facilities in Bandar Tun Razak.

One of them is a huge stadium, Stadium Bolasepak Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium). The stadium received a major overhaul from Cheras's Football Stadium in 2004. The stadium is used for football matches, events and some art performances.

The DBKL district office is located in Bandar Tun Razak's capital. There are some shoplots located in the capital, such as 7-Eleven, Food Court, BHP petrol station, post office, Bumiputra-Commerce Bank, a maternity clinic and a mini supermarket. 7-Eleven outlets are also located in Bandar Sri Permaisuri and Taman Midah. The Malaysian Road Transport Department office is located in Bandar Sri Permaisuri. Taman Midah houses a Makro hypermarket. A 24-hour restaurant, some clinics, photo shops and numerous restaurants are located in Taman Midah



Abdul Khalid Ibrahim

Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is a Malaysian politician and former corporate figure of Malay descent. He is also the current Treasurer-General of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR, or People's Justice Party). Khalid was born in the village of Kampung Jalan Raja Abdullah in Kuala Selangor district, Selangor. He graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and later obtained an MBA from the University of Queensland.[1]

Khalid began his career as a university lecturer. Later, he entered the corporate world and held the position of CEO from 1979 to 1994 in the government-controlled fund management firm Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).[1] In 1981, he became famous for leading the "dawn raid" on the London Stock Exchange, which resulted in PNB gaining a 51% share in British plantation concern Guthrie in less than two hours. Khalid later became the CEO of the Malaysianized Guthrie, now known as Kumpulan Guthrie Bhd, from 1995 to 2003.[1] He later left the corporate scene and entered politics, joining the multiracial opposition party PKR. He was the opposition candidate in the 2007 Ijok by-election for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, contesting against K. Parthiban of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), a component party of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN).[2] In the Malaysian General Election 2008, he contested for the Parliamentary and State Assembly seat for P124 Bandar Tun Razak and N11 Ijok where he won both seats. He will be appointed as the new Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of Selangor.
